Supply Chain Challenges and Opportunities for NHS Trusts Replenishing supplies outside the NHS Supply Chain presents particular difficulties, straining resources and hampering efficiency. Many hospitals handle hundreds of unscheduled deliveries weekly, including medical devices, pharmacy supplies and consumables. Many deliveries are uncoordinated, leading to inefficiencies, excess stock and higher carbon emissions Streamlined logistics reduce costs and emissions, enabling the NHS to focus on innovation and care delivery while meeting its sustainability commitments. Rudolph and Hellmann are working with NHS Trusts nationwide to address these challenges. Their tailored solutions focus on developing cost-neutral, location-specific strategies to optimise supply chains, reduce waste and enhance patient care. The NHS faces increasing pressure to deliver exceptional patient care while grappling with logistical and financial challenges. Overcoming immense logistical challenges, BMW and Rudolph and Hellmann’s collaboration ensured a smooth rollout. Plant Oxford implemented significant infrastructure and technology changes to achieve this milestone. Key updates included switching to SEPIA (Sequence Picking Assistant) sequencing software in October 2022 and upgrading to the SAP S/4HANA system in October 2023, making it the first BMW plant to use this system for line-side delivery. These upgrades enabled efficient management of warehouse stock and sequencing materials. Warehouse Overhaul and Training Investment In February 2024, the plant undertook a complete warehouse overhaul. Over 90% of old stock was replaced with new model parts, involving a massive refilling process within a week. All new parts were activated in updated IT systems to ensure accurate sequencing. The success relied heavily on frontline workers adapting to rapid changes, supported by intensive training programs. The entire workforce was retrained in just four weeks, with additional staff brought in to maintain operations. Implementing Gemba walks, which emphasises real-time issue resolution and collaboration, played a vital role in addressing challenges during the start-up phase. Achieving Success Through Partnership Despite the scale of change over three years, the plant maintained exceptional key performance indicators (KPIs). This success reflects the strong partnership and mutual trust between BMW and Rudolph and Hellmann, as well as the dedication of the workforce to continuous improvement and innovation.
