One year on working with NHS Trusts

Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword – it's a vital part of modern manufacturing, and UK businesses are taking notice. As industries strive to reduce their environmental impact, companies like Rudolph and Hellmann are setting the bar high, not only by improving their own practices but by helping their clients along their sustainability journeys.

“We understood that simply optimising existing systems wasn’t enough,” explains Sam Dunley, New Business Solutions. “We needed to rethink the entire approach to local logistics and supply chain management. Our concept solution addresses the NAO’s core concerns and empowers Trusts to control their operational efficiency.”

“Our solution isn’t just about cutting costs; it’s about reinvesting savings into patient care,” continues Sam. “By reducing waste, improving efficiency and freeing up clinical time, we’re helping NHS Trusts deliver the best possible care.”

Rudolph and Hellmann responded to the NAO Report by exploring if we could deploy our expertise to help the NHS and Healthcare sector improve efficiencies. Understanding the scale of the challenge, we knew it would need to be a radical ‘cost-neutral solution’ for NHS Trusts to even consider.

The National Audit Office (NAO) report on NHS Supply Chain efficiency, published in January 2024, highlighted the ongoing challenges in achieving optimal procurement and delivery within the NHS. The report emphasised the need for improvements in systems, processes, and clarity of roles to unlock potential savings and ensure effective service delivery.

As a result the business development team at Rudolph and Hellmann, alongside our solutions engineers (who specialise in operational efficiencies), have spent the last 12 months engaging directly with NHS Trusts across the UK. In doing so we’ve gained a deep understanding of their unique local challenges and pressures.  This extensive consultation has culminated in the development of a radical, cost-neutral solution designed to significantly reduce operational costs while simultaneously delivering substantial benefits.

Recognising that a “one-size-fits-all” approach is rarely effective in the complex landscape of the NHS, Rudolph and Hellmann focused on understanding the specific pain points experienced by individual Trusts.  Through open dialogue and collaborative workshops, they identified recurring themes, including stock management inefficiencies, inconsistent product availability, and the burden of non-clinical tasks on clinical staff.  These insights have directly informed the development of their innovative solution.

The Rudolph and Hellmann solution focuses on localised consolidation centres, strategically placed to serve multiple hospital facilities.  This model offers a multitude of advantages:

Improved Stock Integrity: By implementing robust inventory management systems and processes within the consolidation centres, the solution dramatically reduces material waste and obsolescence, leading to significant cost savings.  Real-time visibility of stock levels ensures that the right products are available when and where they are needed.

Consistent Product Availability and Visibility:  The consolidation centre acts as a central hub, ensuring consistent product availability and providing complete visibility across all participating Trusts. This coordinated approach facilitates resource sharing and eliminates the need for individual Trusts to hold excessive stock.

Enhanced Information Sharing: The solution fosters a collaborative environment, enabling the sharing of best practices and data between sites. This transparency empowers Trusts to make informed decisions and optimise their procurement strategies.

Reduced Delivery Congestion and Emissions:  By consolidating deliveries through the local hub, the solution significantly reduces the number of vehicles entering hospital grounds. This not only alleviates congestion but also contributes to a greener, more sustainable healthcare environment.

Reduced Clinical Time on Non-Clinical Work:  By streamlining logistics and supply chain processes, the solution frees up valuable clinical time, allowing healthcare professionals to focus on patient care rather than administrative tasks.

“Our solution is not just about cutting costs; it’s about reinvesting those savings back into patient care. By reducing waste, improving efficiency, and freeing up clinical time, we’re helping NHS Trusts deliver the best possible care for their patients.”

Rudolph and Hellmann are confident that our cost-neutral solution offers a radical new approach to NHS procurement and logistics.  By working in partnership with individual Trusts, they believe they can unlock significant efficiencies and contribute to a more sustainable and effective healthcare system.  They are currently working with several NHS Trusts to test the concept solution and are eager to demonstrate the tangible benefits it can deliver.
